Why a Korean Driver Ditched Gasoline for a Tesla – A Full 1-Year Review

Rear view of a Tesla Model Y parked outdoors

After driving a Hyundai Grandeur HG for several years, I switched to a Tesla Model Y about a year ago. At first, I wasn’t sure if electric cars were for me—but I was definitely curious about Tesla itself. The self-driving tech, futuristic interface, and constant OTA updates pulled me in. And I’m glad they did.

🛣️ Silence at Red Lights: Surprisingly Addictive

The Grandeur was a solid mid-size sedan, but the engine vibrations during stops were quite noticeable. That soft “brrrrr” while waiting at lights became a minor stress factor.

But with the Model Y, the silence is therapeutic. In heavy traffic during my daily commute, that quiet makes a big difference in mental comfort. And when I need to overtake slow cars? The instant torque and acceleration feel amazing—like a roller coaster, but legal.

⚡ Charging at Home > Trips to Gas Stations

Living in an apartment with a basement garage charger, I just plug it in and forget about it. No more trips to gas stations. It’s convenience on another level.

Of course, highway travel can be tricky. That’s why I always carry a CCS adapter in my trunk—it's saved me more than once. At around 300,000 KRW (roughly $220), it’s not cheap, but it’s worth it for peace of mind.

🛠️ Running Costs: Not Even Close

Grandeur: Monthly cost around ₩250,000–₩300,000 (fuel + maintenance)
Model Y: Monthly cost around ₩50,000–₩80,000 (mostly charging)

In 14 months of owning the Tesla, the only thing I’ve refilled is windshield wiper fluid. There’s no oil, no filters, no belts—just low-maintenance bliss. Maybe tires in a few years, but that’s about it.

🎧 Sound, Space & Ride Comfort

Surprisingly, the Model Y’s audio system is better. The bass, clarity, and soundstage really impressed me. For music lovers, it’s a treat.

Interior space-wise, the Grandeur felt more spacious and plush. Its smooth ride was perfect for long drives. The Model Y has more storage thanks to the frunk + trunk, but its ride is a bit stiffer. Also, the glass roof is cool but lacks lighting—so at night, when my kid drops a toy, I need my phone flashlight. 😅

🚀 OTA Updates & Autonomous Features

Tesla pushes regular over-the-air software updates, so your car keeps improving even when parked. It feels like owning a gadget that just gets smarter over time.

Even better—if you buy the self-driving package later, those features get activated remotely. It’s like unlocking DLC in a video game.

🎁 Fun Extras Only Tesla Offers

Tesla has a playful side, too:

  • Say “Ho Ho Ho” and your car turns into Santa’s sleigh
  • Lock sounds can be replaced with a cat meow or lightsaber
  • During Christmas, the screen shows a fireplace with carols

My kid often says, “Let’s use Santa Mode today!” – It’s not just a car, it’s a toy for grownups and kids alike.

❓ Would I Go Back to Gasoline?

Honestly… I doubt it. The peace of silence, the app control, the lower cost—Tesla spoiled me. It’s addictive.

If you live in Seoul or the suburbs and don’t go on weekly road trips, the Model Y is a fantastic choice.

🧾 Final Thought

Tesla isn’t just a car. It’s a digital creature that evolves every day.
And I’ve happily joined that evolution.
